Wearable art made from washing machine hose

Ditimar Delchev says, “„It is not the high cost of the material that makes a jewel valuable. It is up to the designer’s imagination and that of the person who possesses and wears it”. Since 1996 he has been a professor for metal and jewelry design at the Bulgarian Academy for Applied Art in Sofia.

Porcelain jewelry

Beate Pfefferkorn doesn’t take porcelain for embellishment, but for a basic and shape-giving element. It is the ranking of countless single porcelain parts which leads to the jewelry piece. Repetition is of fundamental importance. During the work process, similar but never identical single parts are created. Furthermore, the specific characteristics of the material are of great importance. At the beginning of the work process porcelain is a malleable mass and allows highly delicate handling, which is perpetuated by firing it at 1260 °C. The material, which has become very hard now, is not only lovely and beautiful but also very comfortable to wear. During movement the single parts produce soft sounds. Moreover, the colors of the single pieces vary: Vivid tones are placed equally next to virgin white.

aesthetics of natural microforms

Czech-born, Berlin-based jeweler Alena Willroth’s collection Slast (Czech for bliss) comprises of work that enchants with magical lines. Her patterns develop out of the interplay between carefully premeditated designs and the inherent willfulness of her materials; the weightless and delicate nature of her work allows even opulent forms to appear light and spare. Willroth’s bias for the aesthetics of natural microforms gave shape to her jewelry: In search of unorthodox methods of expression, she developed a new welding process that allows her to form intricate pieces from polyethylene foils. A pencil drawing is traced to foil, so Willroth can hand-cut it with a surgical knife, and heat and pressure bring the pieces to their final form. During this process, the material exerts its will to influence the outcome, resulting in a marriage of design and faith and making every piece unique.

A question of value

In the mid-1980s, inspired by Marcel Duchamp’s objets trouvés, André Ribeiro combined two contrary materials: diamonds and rubber. His source of inspiration was a black sealing ring used for plumbing pipes. With the diamond, the hardest of all gemstones and the stone with the best light reflection properties, Ribeiro found the ideal complement. Thanks to the rubber’s tension, the connection between the diamonds set in gold and the soft base material is not only dynamic but also does justice to the materials involved. “The question of the value of what is intrinsically worthless and the worthlessness of the valuable reflects a stance that is basic to my life,” says Ribeiro. Paulina’s Friends presents Ribeiro’s earliest unknown work from the 80-ies, which is considered to be a precursor of the diamonds rubber collection.
